THE DEVIL’S TRILL AND THE ICONIC LA FOLLIA

The festival’s central concert will present the Czech debut of Spanish violinist Miriam Hontana with her ensemble OBNI (Objeto Barocco No Identificado). The programme brings together exceptionally virtuosic works, showcasing her fiery temperament, fresh approach, and mature artistic sensibility.

Few works of eighteenth-century violin literature are surrounded by as many myths as Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata. According to legend, the sonata was played to the Italian master in a dream by the devil himself. To this day, it is considered one of the most demanding pieces in the violin repertoire. The highlight of the evening will then be the most famous example of Spanish inspiration in Italian Baroque music: Corelli’s iconic sonata La Follia. Each variation is, in a sense, a new telling of an old story—filled with sunshine and the sparkling colours of the Mediterranean.

“Miriam Hontana possesses a special kind of light, granted to very few—one that transcends the immense technical demands of her instrument and makes it part of her, as if it were an extension of her own body…”
