Les folies d’Espagne
Marin Marais and his musical gems for viola da gamba
Spirale Ensemble (France)
Marianne Muller (France) – viola da gamba
Thursday 14 July 2005, 7.30 pm
Břevnov Monastery, Teresian Hall, Markétská 1, Praha 6
The programme of this concert offered repertoire for the viola da gamba in its most characteristic: the music presented in the Teresian Hall of the Břevnov Monastery came for the period of the viols’ greatest flourish, from the country which most contributed to their popularity and from the pen of one of the most prominent performers and composers of this specialization. Marin Marais (1656–1728) was one of the foremost exponents of the French viol school which produced, between 1670 and 1770, many excellent virtuosos. The French viol player Marianne Muller went with the Spanish theme of the 2005 festival by choosing to perform, among other pieces, the 32 variations from Marais’s second volume of viol compositions called “Les Folies d’ Espagne”.
