The Italian baroque composers Alessandro Scarlatti (1660–1725) and his son Domenico (1685–1757) occupied their rightful place in the “Spanish” programme of the 6th SFEM. They both were celebrating their anniversaries in 2005. Moreover, Domenico can be perceived as belonging to the history of Spanish music as he was active in Madrid from 1733 until his death 22 years later. Both count among the foremost exponents of the Italian opera and oratorio and are the authors of works from which a number of arias presented in this evening’s programme were taken. The instrumental intermezzos came from the pens of the Scarlattis’ fellow countrymen, Tarquinio Merula, Biagio Marini and others.
