In the 17th and the 18th century Rome was living through a prolonged flourish of its musical life. Music was performed on a large scale not only in the Vatican Basilica, but also in other churches, monasteries and aristocratic palaces. The city thus became an important hub of the development of Italian baroque music and the workplace of such eminent composers as A. Scarlatti, G. F. Händel, A. Corelli, A. Caldara and F. Gasparini. Some of their most exquisite cantatas, arias and sonatas were rendered by the Polish soprano Anna Mikolajcyzk and the oboe player Mark Niewiedzial with the accompaniment of the I Virtuosi ensemble. The atmosphere of the evening was enhanced by the charming environment of the baroque Vrtba Garden in the vicinity of the Prague Castle.
