Annotation

What is the difference between a “motet” and a “grand motet”? A great one, of course! The monumental motets of Michel-Richard de Lalande were intended for the spacious and lavishly decorated Royal Chapel built by the founder of the Versailles Chateau, Louis XIV, to confirm his piety. In his motets, de Lalande masterfully combines choir and solo aria passages, in a way similar to the baroque opera, but originality marks his compositional approach in the instrumental parts as well. The performance of these baroque gems has called for the participation of three ensembles: the Choir of the Centre for Baroque Music in Versailles, Les Pages et Les Chantres, Collegium Marianum orchestra, and a quartet of brilliant soloists – Chantal Santon-Jeffrey, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Fraçois Joron, and Lisandro Abadie. Under the baton of Olivier Schneebeli they will meet at the Sts Simon and Jude Church in Prague on 11 July and join their forces to perform these magnificent compositions, in some cases in modern world premiere, in order to celebrate the spiritual dimension of the resplendent Roi du Soleil
