Annotation

The Muse of Music and Lyric Poetry, Euterpe, will be the patron of the concert of the vocal ensemble Cantoría, which will be accompanied by three instrumentalists in the Imperial Hall of Troja Chateau. The name of this Muse could be translated as “well-pleasing” or “giving delight” – and that is exactly what the interpretation of the lively Spanish quartet will be.

The charming, witty, yet dramatic programme is based on purely Spanish musical forms – the famous ensaladas (i.e. salads) and villancicos. These pieces tend to be programmatic and their theme is usually a struggle, in which, of course, good always triumphs over evil. While we know the villancicos mainly from three large songbooks known as cancioneros, dating from the 16th century, we can find a Czech connection in the ensaladas. The most famous ensaladas of Matteo Flecha Sr. were published in Prague in 1581. The concert of the Cantoría ensemble will remind us of the importance of Prague as a cultural centre at the end of the 16th century.

Cantoría

vocal ensemble

Cantoría is a vocal ensemble led by Jorge Losana, founded in the summer of 2016 and originating in the Early Music Department of the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (Barcelona).   Since it was selected for the EEEmerging 2018 programme, a project supported by the European Union and organised by the Centre Culturel de Rencontre d’Ambronay (France), it has been building an international career, thanks to concerts all around Europe.   The repertoire of Cantoría is based mainly on the vocal music of the Spanish Golden Age. Cantoría explores and takes full advantage of the theatrical and communicative character of Renaissance vocal music.   The ensemble is supported by the Acción Cultural Española, the Instituto Nacional de Artes Escénicas y de la Música, the Consejo de Cultura de la Comunidad de Madrid and the Instituto de las Industrias Culturales y las Artes de la Región de Murcia.
